Single-byte characters (up to 256 character codes) are used in English and European languages because such languages do not contain very many characters. Japanese, however, has kanji, hiragana and katakana characters in addition to Arabic numerals and the Roman alphabet, so it uses double-byte characters (2 bytes per character; up to 65,536 character codes).
